Reports from Somalia indicate that Al-Shabaab fighters captured the town of Mahas in the eastern Hiraan region this morning after intense combat.
The battle, in which the militants used vehicles packed with explosives, is reported to have caused heavy casualties to Somali government forces.

After hours of fierce fighting around Mahas, Al-Shabaab finally managed to break through the government forces' defenses and take control of the town.

A statement from Al-Shabaab confirmed the capture of Mahas, claiming they killed at least 63 government soldiers and wounded 84 others in the battle.

Al-Shabaab also released images showing the first moments of their takeover of Mahas and the losses incurred by the government forces.

Government troops are reported to have scattered into the bush, particularly towards the city of Beledweyne.

So, what do we know about the strategic importance of the Mahas district, which has fallen to Al-Shabaab?

Mahas is a strategic district located in the eastern Hiraan region of central Somalia.

Although it is not a large city, it holds significant importance as a crossroads, connecting several districts and regions in the south and central parts of the country.

Mahas is approximately 90 km from Beledweyne, the capital of the Hiraan region, and 72 km from the district of Elbur. Mahas is also located 90 km northeast of the Bulo Burte district.

The district connects three regions: Hiraan, Middle Shabelle, and Galguduud. For example, Mahas is 120 km from the Guriel district and 82 km from the Adan Yabal district in Middle Shabelle.

Strategic roads that are vital for movement between the central regions pass through Mahas. Its capture makes it easier for Al-Shabaab fighters to maintain control over the districts and areas they hold in Hiraan, Galguduud, and Middle Shabelle.

The importance of this town is highlighted by the fact that Ethiopian forces captured it on March 24, 2014, and remained there for more than 11 consecutive years.

For the past three years, Mahas has been a major center for the Ethiopian-established militia known as the Macawisley, who have engaged in fierce battles with Al-Shabaab jihadists.
